There are quite a few vacant homesteads and old farms on the eastern plains. With the proper permissions, metal detecting these properties is a guaranteed fun way to spend time on the plains!

An abandoned homestead near Deer Trail, CO

An abandoned homestead near Deer Trail, CO

Hog Haven Farm is located on an old homestead–the original farmhouse dates to 1926–and they decided to allow a few of their volunteers to come metal detect the land for a day. While nothing valuable was discovered, there were some fun finds. An old saw blade, a handful of .22 bullets, antique soda can tabs, cans and miscellaneous metal scraps were the common finds. Most importantly, a water shut-off valve for the well was located!

For a day of metal detecting, you’ll need a hand-held metal detector (we used the brand Garrett), a pinpoint locator (Garrett makes these, as do many other companies), and some digging tools–shovels, hand trowels, etc.

To locate old farms, researching topographical maps is helpful. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has a digital catalogue of historic topographic maps, where homesteads are marked as small black boxes. Utilizing these maps, and determining the current property owner, is an important part of finding an area to bring your metal detector to. You can also chat with locals to see if there are any areas of interest and people you should know prior to exploring.

Check out some fun pictures from the metal detecting adventure below:
