It’s the season for cooler weather, harvesting crops and sharing Colorado-grown favorites with locals. On the Eastern Plains, we’re celebrating the “Annual Farm Festival” on Sept. 24-25 at May Farms in Byers, Colo., and we’d love for you to join us. Farmers, ranchers and local businesses will bring in produce, locally produced goods, provide live demonstrations, and more. And for all the animal lovers, there will be a chance to see alpacas, goats, pigs, sheep and more.

Similar to National Farmer’s Day, held each year on Oct. 12, the celebration will be a chance to tour the farm and pay tribute to the hard work and contributions of all farmers on the Eastern Plains. May Farms, for example, has chickens, sheep, goats and donkeys along with a corn maze and pumpkin patch in September and October. Other local favorites that will be at the celebration include Byers America (feed store), Tall Grass Alpacas, Chimera Ranch, Caramel Apple Farm, Hog Haven Pig Sanctuary and more. Activities Include:

  • Adventures: Perfect for all ages, there will be a family-friendly scavenger hunt at the farm. While looking for items, make your way around the pumpkin patch, corn maze and state of the art Agtion Greenhouse. There’s also a barrel train and haystack ride that will be giving rides throughout the celebration.
  • Informational Farm Fun: Come meet and pet the animals of the Eastern Plains and learn what they do for us. You and your family can also watch fiber being spun on to bobbins and learn how to weave the spun fiber into a beautiful cloth. Before you end your night, make sure you stop by and learn about the Star Haven Observatory, which will have two solar telescopes and a flight simulator. Then, go enjoy the beautiful, clear, night sky of the Eastern Plains.
  • Pets with a Purpose: Service dogs for veterans and their families will make an appearance at the Adams Warrior Buddy booth. There will also be rescued, therapy pigs meeting and greeting friends at the Hog Haven booth. Stop by to learn what both these animals are doing to help others.

If you can’t make it, come see these local treasures:

  • Dry Dock Brewery: The first brewery in Aurora, Colo., Dry Dock’s North Dock, has two taprooms with more than a dozen brews to choose from. You can even stop by the Dry Dock brew house and play some free Disc Golf.
  • The Great Escape Mustang Sanctuary: Welcomed to Colorado High Plains Adventure this month, The Great Escape Mustang Sanctuary offers education and awareness about mustangs and burros. They also provide training, adoptions and sanctuary to those in need. Come see one of these beautiful creatures for yourself.

There is no admission fee and the festival will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. May Farms is located at 64001 US Hwy. 36 in Byers, CO. Please be aware that pets are not allowed on the premises for the Annual Farm Festival. Alpacas in particular are very afraid of dogs. Thank you for your understanding. Hope to see you there as we enjoy the last days of summer at Colorado High Plains Adventure.

Colorado High Plains Adventure offers real life fun, and when you realize that the fun you’re having could impact animals in a positive way too, it makes it that much better. Colorado High Plains Adventure has three unique destinations where you can visit animals that have been rescued and are looking for a friend.

Here are the sanctuaries you can take your family to visit:

  • Donkeys: Longhopes Donkey Shelter gives a home to the donkeys of the Rocky Mountains that would otherwise be at risk for neglect, abuse or death. Donkeys are the smallest members of the horse family and are very strong and intelligent creatures. They have an incomparable ability for rehabilitation and affection. Head on down to Longhopes to see these beautiful animals on August 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for the “Fall for Burro Fundraiser”. Click here for tickets, and visit here to see how you can help.
  • Mustangs: The Great Escape Mustang Sanctuary claims over 50,000 wild GEMS_Herd(3)_5-16horses are in short-term and long-term holding facilities nationwide while numbers should be closer to 27,000. By giving these beautiful creatures a home, The Great Escape Mustang Sanctuary helps alleviate the pressures on holding facilities. They offer education and awareness about mustangs and burros, collaborate to support wild horses on the range and provide training, adoptions and sanctuary to those in need. Click here for upcoming events (like the yoga and horsemanship seminar) and here to donate today.
  • Hogs: Hogs (or pigs) are extremely social animals and form close bonds with the people who regularly surround them. Hog Haven provides a safe, happy home for potbellied pigs rescued from situations of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Coming soon to Colorado High Plains Adventure, the sanctuary becomes a reality. Join the email registry for important updates on how to volunteer and make a difference for the animals at the farm. You can also email info@hoghavenfarm.org if you’re interested in having the therapy pigs make an appearance at your facility. These pigs bring joy to both adult and children’s programs.

Don’t wait! Come out to Colorado High Plains Adventure today to give your family, and a loving animal, a world of happiness.
